Leak sensors and automatic shutoff valves
Leak sensors
Small battery-powered pucks that sound an alarm, and in Wi-Fi models send a phone alert, when water touches their contacts. Place them under sinks, behind toilets, next to the water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, and fridge, and near the sump pump.
Automatic shutoff valves
A motorised valve on the main line that closes when a sensor detects water, or when a flow monitor sees unusual continuous flow. Installation on the main usually calls for a plumber.
Limits
- Sensors only detect water where they sit.
- Batteries and Wi-Fi need checking.
- Shutoffs don't fix the leak. Someone still needs to repair it and dry the area.
Some insurers offer discounts for monitored leak devices. Ask yours.
