How to fix a dripping faucet
A steady drip wastes water every day and usually means one worn part.
Before you start
- Close the shutoff valves under the sink and open the faucet to relieve pressure.
- Plug the drain so small parts can't fall in.
- Photograph each step as you disassemble.
Identify the type
- Compression (separate hot and cold handles that tighten down): replace the rubber washer and possibly the valve seat.
- Cartridge (single or double handle that moves smoothly): replace the cartridge. Take the old one to the store to match the brand and model.
- Ball (single handle over a rounded cap): replacement kits include the seats and springs.
- Ceramic disc (single lever over a wide cylinder): clean or replace the disc cartridge and its seals.
When to call a plumber
Corroded or seized parts, a valve seat that can't be removed, or leaks from the faucet body. Sometimes replacing the faucet is more economical.
