Refrigerator ice maker and water line leaks
The small supply line feeding a fridge's ice maker or dispenser runs behind the unit where nobody looks, so slow leaks can soak subfloors for weeks.
Inspect
- Pull the fridge out gently. Lines are short, so don't yank.
- Check the line from the shutoff valve to the fridge for cracks, kinks, crimped spots and drips at both ends.
- Look for warped flooring, staining or musty odor.
Upgrade
- Replace thin plastic tubing with a braided stainless refrigerator supply line.
- Make sure there's an accessible shutoff valve.
- Leave a loop of slack so moving the fridge doesn't stress the fittings.
- Add a leak sensor behind the unit.
