Preventing washing machine hose leaks
Washer supply hoses sit under constant water pressure, and a burst hose can release a large amount of water quickly, especially when no one is home.
Inspect
- Pull the washer out and check the hoses for bulges, cracks, kinks, and corrosion at the fittings.
- Rubber hoses age even when they look fine. Many manufacturers recommend replacing them every few years. Check your washer's manual.
Upgrade
- Braided stainless steel hoses resist bursting better than plain rubber.
- Leave a few inches of clearance behind the machine so hoses aren't sharply bent.
- Consider a washer drain pan and a leak sensor on the floor.
Habits
- Don't run the washer when you're leaving the house.
- For long trips, turn the washer supply valves off.
